The gifted and brilliant scientist Mikhail Rubin finds himself in the dungeons of the camp due to a personal conflict with the People's Commissar Beria. It is lucky that he has a best friend and colleague Kirill, thanks to whom he is released. Kirill recommended a friend as a good scientist to a secret project aimed at creating an atomic bomb. But upon arrival in Moscow, Mikhail learns that his fiancée Anna Galeeva, while he was in the camp, married his friend Kirill.
The man was shocked by this, he did not expect such a betrayal from people close to him, but what about them, because they have a matter of state importance, they will have to work together. For the sake of completing a responsible task, Mikhail will have to come to terms with betrayal.
A man tries not to think about the events that happened to him, so that negative thoughts do not interfere with work. They face a race to the brink of human capabilities, a mortal risk and the decisive day of the first test. Scientists had no right to make a mistake - the future of all mankind was decided at the Semipalatinsk test site.
